The central filter of the haemodialysis machine, sometimes called an "artificial kidney". It is made up of thousands of semi-permeable hollow fibres through which the blood flows. Waste products and excess water pass from the blood into the dialysis solution, while the blood cells and proteins remain in the circulation. It is the dialyser that actually carries out the purification.
