A hormone naturally produced by healthy kidneys. It acts on the bone marrow, stimulating it to produce red blood cells, which carry oxygen. When the kidneys are diseased, this production decreases and renal anaemia sets in, causing tiredness and breathlessness. Synthetic versions (EPO, ESA) help to make up for this deficiency.
