Acute kidney injury

A sudden loss, within a few hours or days, of the kidneys' ability to filter the blood. It is often temporary and reversible if managed quickly. Common causes are a drop in blood supply to the kidneys, an obstruction of the urinary tract, or damage following an operation, an accident or a serious infection. Treatment is often given in intensive care.
